My son in Japan has a birthday the same week as my nephew in England. Holding a birthday party for my son reminds me of my childhood memories.
In England, when it is your child’s birthday we will invite all his/her friends to your house or to a rented space such as a town hall. The children will all bring a birthday present. However, they do receive a little treat themselves at the end when they leave. This is called a “party bag”. Within this bag are usually a few sweets and treats.
While at the birthday party, the parents of the birthday child usually take control of the party. The visiting children’s parents will often leave, but they might be asked to stay if the party is for very young children.
At the party, the children will usually play party games like “pass the parcel, musical statues or musical chairs.” There also might be some entertainment like a magician or a disco with a DJ.
“Pass the parcel” is a classic party game where a present (parcel) is wrapped in multiple layers and is passed around while music plays. When the music stops, the person holding the parcel unwraps one layer, and the game continues until the final prize is revealed.
Musical statues and musical chairs are games where players move to music and freeze when it stops. In musical statues, players must freeze completely still, and any movement results in elimination. In musical chairs, players walk or dance around a circle of chairs, and when the music stops, they scramble to sit on a chair; the person left standing is out, and a chair is removed for the next round.
For older children, instead of having a traditional party, they will often do something which is related to their hobbies. For my birthday, from the ages of about 10 – 14, my parents would hire an indoor football pitch and my friends and I would play football for an hour or two. After football, we would be taken to McDonalds or KFC.
From ages 14 -16 birthdays tended to be more like sleepovers. Friends would come to my house and stay the night. We would usually play video games and watch movies together.
In both Japan and the UK, it is always nice to see people celebrate their child’s birthday. Whether it be with family or friends, I have lots of happy memories of birthdays growing up and I hope my son has similar happy experiences.

日本の息子とイギリスに住む甥の誕生日は同じ週にあります。息子のバースディパーティーを開くと、自分の幼いころを思い出します。
イギリスでは、子どもの誕生日になると、その子の友達全員を自宅や町役場などのレンタルスペースに招待します。ゲストの子供たちは皆、誕生日プレゼントを持参します。そして帰る際にはその子供たちにもちょっとしたお土産が渡されます。これを「party bag」と呼び、中にはお菓子やちょっとした贈り物がいくつか入っています。
誕生日パーティーでは、主役の子どもの親が進行役を務めるのが一般的です。ゲストの子どもの親は先に帰ることが多いですが、幼児のパーティーの場合には残るよう求められることもあります。
パーティーでは、子どもたちが「pass the parcel」「musical statues 」「musical chairs」などのパーティーゲームを楽しむのが定番です。マジシャンによるパフォーマンスやDJを招いたディスコなど、エンターテイメントが用意されることもあります。
“Pass the parcel”は、プレゼント（パーセル）を何重にも包み、音楽が流れる間に行き渡らせる古典的なパーティーゲームです。音楽が止まった時、小包を持っている人が1枚ずつ開け、最終的な賞品が現れるまでゲームが続きます。
音楽に合わせて動き、音楽が止まったら静止するゲームには「musical statues」と「musical chairs」があります。「musical statues」では完全に静止しなければならず、少しでも動くと失格となります。「musical chairs」では、プレイヤーは円形に並べた椅子の周りを歩きながら踊り、音楽が止まったら急いで椅子に座ります。座れなかった人が脱落し、次のラウンドでは椅子が1脚減らされます。
年長の子供たちは、伝統的なパーティーの代わりに趣味に関連した活動を行うことが多いです。私の誕生日は10歳から14歳頃まで、両親が屋内サッカー場を借り、友人たちと1〜2時間サッカーをして過ごしました。サッカーの後はマクドナルドやKFCに連れて行ってもらいました。
14歳から16歳にかけては、誕生日パーティーはどちらかというと泊まりの集まりが主流でした。友達が家に泊まりに来て、一緒にビデオゲームをしたり映画を観たりするのが定番でした。
日本でもイギリスでも、子供たちの誕生日を祝う姿を見るのはいつも素敵なものです。家族とであれ友達とであれ、私は子供の頃の誕生日にたくさんの幸せな思い出があります。息子にも同じように幸せな経験をしてほしいと願っています。
