In the past few years I have increasingly heard a lot of my students say “Dad and Mum” and “white and black”. In all languages there is a “fixed” or “preferred” order for pairs, called binomials (like up and down). Japanese have this too, but sometimes the preferred order is different to the English language.
For example, Japanese people say 父と母 (chichi to haha) → “father and mother” or おじいさんとおばあさん (ojiisan to obaasan) → grandpa and grandma. The order is usually male first, opposite from English where the female is usually first such as “Mum and Dad” or “Granny” and “Grandpa”.
Additionally, in Japanese they say 白黒 (shirokuro) → “white–black”. Japanese often puts white first, while English prefers “black and white”.
Other examples include:
南北 (nanboku) → south–north. Japanese usually says south first, while English prefers “north and south.”
貧富 (hinpu)→ poor–rich. Japanese says poor first, while English prefers “rich and poor.”
Using the right order makes a learner’s English sound much more fluent and idiomatic. So I always correct my students and tell them to repeat in the English language order. Moreover, If learners don’t recognize the “normal” order, their English may sound disjointed to the listener.

適切な順序を使うことで、学習者の英語はより流暢で自然な表現になります。そのため、私は常に生徒を訂正し、英語の順序で繰り返すように指導しています。さらに、学習者が「通常の」順序を認識していない場合、その英語は聞き手にとって不自然な印象を与える可能性があります。
