Christmas is celebrated in many different ways around the world, and each country adds its own special flavor to the holiday. I’ve been lucky to live in several places and see how families come together to celebrate, sometimes with snow, sometimes with sunshine, but always with love. Let me take you on a little journey to show how Christmas feels in South Africa, the Middle East, and Spain.
In South Africa,
Christmas comes during summer! That means no snowmen or hot cocoa, instead, we enjoy sunshine, laughter, and a big outdoor BBQ called a braai. My family would gather at one house, and everyone brought a dish to share. There’d be creamy potato salad, boerewors (a yummy South African sausage), chicken pie, and lots of vegetables. One of my favorite games was “Pass the Parcel,” where grown-ups passed around a wrapped gift with many layers, and each person got to unwrap one layer to find a surprise. Kids received presents from everyone, which made the day feel extra special. But we didn’t open gifts right away. First, we’d go to church early in the morning on December 25th. Only after that did we gather around the tree to open our presents. At lunch, we pulled Christmas crackers, colorful tubes that popped open with a snap! Inside were paper crowns, tiny toys, and silly jokes that made everyone laugh. Even though it was hot outside, the warmth inside came from being together.
When I lived in Kuwait,
I saw Christmas in a very different way. Kuwait is a country where most people don’t celebrate Christmas, but the holiday spirit still found its way in Malls and hotels sparkled with lights and decorations, and you could see Christmas trees standing tall in busy places. People greeted each other with “Merry Christmas,” even if they didn’t celebrate it themselves. Since it wasn’t a public holiday, my family would often fly back to South Africa to celebrate. It reminded me that Christmas isn’t just about where you are, it’s about being with the people you love.
Later, I moved to Spain,
and Christmas there felt like one long, joyful party! Families gathered around tables filled with seafood, crab, shrimp, and fish, along with jamón (Spanish ham), nuts, and sweet treats like the Roscón de Reyes which is a round, donut-shaped sweet yeast bread to celebrate the Twelfth Night after Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, everyone ate 12 grapes, one for each stroke of midnight, to bring good luck for the year ahead. But the most magical part? Christmas didn’t end on December 25th. It kept going until January 6th, when Spain celebrated El Día de los Reyes, the Day of the Three Kings. Children receive gifts not just on Christmas Day, but again on Three Kings’ Day! The streets fill with music, parades, and smiling faces as families celebrate together.
What I’ve learned from all these places
is that Christmas doesn’t look the same everywhere, and that’s what makes it so special. Whether it’s a sunny BBQ, sparkling lights in a desert city, or a parade of kings in Spain, the heart of Christmas is always the same: being with family, sharing joy, and celebrating love.

南アフリカでは、
クリスマスは夏に訪れます！雪だるまもホットココアもありませんが、代わりに太陽の光と笑い声、そして「ブライ」と呼ばれる大きな屋外バーベキューを楽しみます。家族が一軒の家に集まり、皆が持ち寄った料理を分かち合いました。クリーミーなポテトサラダ、ボエレワース（美味しい南アフリカのソーセージ）、チキンパイ、そしてたくさんの野菜が並びました。私の大好きなゲームの一つは「プレゼント渡し」で、大人たちが何重にも包んだ贈り物を回し、一人ずつ一枚ずつ包みを開けてサプライズを見つけるのです。子供たちは皆からプレゼントをもらうので、その日は特に特別な気分になりました。でもプレゼントはすぐには開けませんでした。まず12月25日の早朝に教会へ行き、その後にようやくツリーを囲んで開けるのです。昼食時にはクリスマスクラッカーを引っ張り、カラフルな筒がパチンと音を立てて開きます！中には紙の王冠や小さなおもちゃ、みんなを笑わせるおかしなジョークが入っていました。外は暑くても、一緒にいることで室内は温かさに包まれたのです。
クウェートに住んでいた頃、
クリスマスの捉え方が全く違いました。クウェートではクリスマスを祝う人はほとんどいませんが、それでも祝祭の雰囲気は漂っていました。ショッピングモールやホテルはイルミネーションと装飾で輝き、人通りの多い場所にはクリスマスツリーが堂々と立っていました。人々は自ら祝わなくても「メリークリスマス」と挨拶を交わしました。祝日ではなかったため、私の家族はよく南アフリカに帰国して祝いました。クリスマスは場所ではなく、愛する人と共に過ごすことが大切だと気づかせてくれました。
その後スペインに移住すると、
クリスマスはまるで長い楽しいパーティーのようでした！家族はテーブルを囲み、シーフード、カニ、エビ、魚に加え、ハモン（スペイン産ハム）、ナッツ、甘いお菓子を楽しみました。ロスコーン・デ・レイエス（Roscón de Reyes）のように、クリスマス後の十二夜を祝う丸いドーナツ型の甘いパンです。大晦日には皆、12粒のブドウを食べます。真夜中の鐘の音に合わせて1粒ずつ、新年の幸運を願って。しかし最も魔法のような部分は？クリスマスは12月25日で終わらないのです。1月6日の「三王の日（エル・ディア・デ・ロス・レイエス）」まで続きます。子供たちはクリスマス当日だけでなく、三王の日にも再び贈り物を受け取るのです！街は音楽とパレード、笑顔で溢れ、家族が共に祝う光景が広がります。
これまで訪れた数々の場所で学んだのは、クリスマスの姿は場所によって異なるということ。それこそがクリスマスの特別な魅力なのです。陽射しの下でのバーベキューであれ、砂漠の街に輝くイルミネーションであれ、スペインの三賢者のパレードであれ、クリスマスの本質はいつも同じ。家族と共に過ごし、喜びを分かち合い、愛を祝うことなのです。
