Learning languages in America is completely different from Japan. While it may be a little similar to the UK, some differences make learning languages different. There is more focus on interacting with others in the classroom, less emphasis on test taking and the goal isn’t for a score on an exam or even fluency, we just want simple interactions.
Every school in America is different. There is a different curriculum between states, counties and schools themselves. While there is an overarching requirement for schools to teach some subjects, every school still has some leeway for what they teach and how they teach it. The quality of education can also vary depending on the state. Typically, states in the South such as Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama, tend to have lower education quality than states in the North such as New York, New Jersey, Vermont and Rhode Island. The schools still tend to teach foreign languages with Spanish being the most popular. Other options include French, Mandarin, and sometimes German or even Japanese. These options become available when the student enters high school. In America, it is important to remember that high school is four years long.
During Elementary school, the students might have some Spanish lessons. This usually involves songs to learn how to count and some basic phrases. Many Americans can speak very basic Spanish. The songs are very helpful. Many American adults can still remember the Spanish songs even if they haven’t heard them for many years. Songs are great for young kids and adults alike to learn a new language. The rhythm helps people connect words and memorize them. It is often best to listen to music in the language that you want to learn. Before coming to Japan, I had never heard of taking a test for a language such as TOEFL or EIKEN. This is not a usual thing for Americans to do or study for. While there are some fluency tests, people usually only take them if they need to provide proof of fluency. People tend to put language skills on their job resume without including any test scores and they might have to prove their language skills by speaking in the interview if they are questioned.
Many people have also been using apps to improve their skills with other languages. I had a student recently who has been using a popular app to learn Spanish. Growing up in America, students learn basic Spanish and I can still speak a little bit of it. I tried to speak to her in Spanish, but she wasn’t able to understand or make a sentence despite using this app everyday. I have a similar experience with speaking Japanese. The app doesn’t help as much as people think it does. At the best, it can provide some reading and vocab practice. The best way to learn is through speaking the language. This is the reason why I remember Spanish and French. I spoke the language in the classroom at school. Just like my lessons at Smart Kids English, we speak English and have conversations. This is the best way to learn a language.
Learning a new language can be very challenging. I always recommend using music and speaking to practice learning any language. America is very different from Japan as English is the primary language. It is important for people to learn English in Japan as it can provide new job opportunities and provide a much brighter future for those who can speak English in Japan.
