Recently, many students have been preparing for university by practicing entrance exams or going on tours of university campuses. This can be a stressful time for many, but it is also very exciting. Seeing students talking about their future had me thinking about my time in university as well. University is a great opportunity to try new things and learn about what you want to do with your life.
My path to university was quite different to what many of my students are doing. In America, some ways to go to university involve entrance exams, writing a letter, getting great grades or even being an incredible athlete. I didn’t follow this route, instead I went to community college first. I originally wanted to study law so that I could help people. I took many classes that involved policing, laws, crime scene investigation and I even spent some time with police during their work. I quickly found that this work was not for me. It was not a waste of time, even for my university progress. In America, we have to take some general classes such as statistics, English, public speaking, history, etc. This gives students a general education. Students must all pick electives, these are classes that they can pick. I decided that I wanted to transfer to a university and learn about something different.
Finding a school wasn’t too difficult for me and I got accepted to Washington State University. In my first semester of university, I took European history, ethics, anthropology, Earth science and sociology. I completely fell in love with anthropology and made that my major within the first month. I kept a minor in history because that is another important part of anthropology and archaeology. I took many classes involving archaeology and anthropology throughout my university career. I also took some history classes. Out of all those classes, I still remember one history class. I took a history class on the middle ages of Europe. I got real teaching experience with that class and I learned about history and even religions. It would be disingenuous to say that every class I took in university stuck with me as, even now, I have difficulty recalling the name of every class. That doesn’t mean that the classes didn’t help me grow. I learned something from every single class and I will always value that growth.
With many students looking to begin their university career, I think it is important to be a little critical of yourself. How can you improve? What should you work on? But also remember what you are good at. This should help guide on what classes you should take. I was not a great public speaker, so I took several public speaking classes and I feel much more comfortable speaking in front of many people. I wanted to improve my writing skills, so I took writing classes. For my history minor, I already had some knowledge on different parts of history, so I didn’t take those classes. Instead, I took Japanese history which in my opinion, is incredibly difficult to learn in just 5 short months. I had to read books and remember names of many of the important people to Japan.
University is really exciting. You have many options and opportunities to improve yourself. It is my hope to help my students now and in the future to get into the universities that they want. I also hope they take advantage of the situation and learn about many different things. There are countless subjects and classes that are available and you never know how that might change your life.
