I went to university from 2005 – 2008 (In the UK we say “university”, not “college”). Keele University was where I studied, which is a university in Staffordshire County. Otherwise known as ‘the midlands’. It was a wonderful chapter of my life and the first time I lived by myself. I made a lot of life-long friends, did a lot of growing up, and learned how to be independent. I believe it was also a time which strongly shaped the way I teach today.
I studied American Studies. At the time this was quite a rare topic to study, with only a handful of universities offering this course. Nowadays, it is a very popular subject. The subject involves studying anything and everything about America. There were several modules I could choose from, which were all related to America. During my three years at university I studied modules in American politics, literature, movies and history. I particularly enjoyed studying the modules in American movies such as ‘1960’s new-wave American film’ and ‘the films of Alfred Hitchcock’. I also enjoyed studying history. Specifically the ‘Vietnam War’ and ‘Black Civil Rights’. Nowadays,many of my students at Smart Kids English have lived in America, so I feel like I am able to understand their experiences in that country more having studied it, even though I grew up in England.
My decision to choose American Studies came about due to my schooling. I was never a particularly academic student. Subjects such as maths and science were always a struggle for me. However, I always excelled in sports and humanities subjects such as history, ancient history and English literature. I was never certain of what I wanted to study at university, or if I even wanted to go. However, while researching, I came across American Studies and noticed that it included so many topics which I enjoyed. I loved the variety of the subject and I loved that I was able to choose what specific area I could focus on. When teaching my students I always make a note of what they are passionate about and try to raise this during lessons as I believe students want to communicate more in English when they are talking about a topic they are passionate about.
What I adored most about studying this subject was the freedom and the way the lecturer taught us and treated us (In the UK, at university, we often say “lecturer” instead of “teacher”). The lecturer would screen movies for us, and then invite us to discuss the theme and message of the movie. We would have open reading lessons where students read a book or article and then were free to express their opinion, even if it was different from the lecturers. Reading books and watching movies about a different culture introduced me to new ideas and I became fascinated with the world. This is something I try to do at Smart Kids English. I try to introduce my students to different countries (especially English speaking ones) and teach them about their cultures.
I remember feeling relief at the relaxed nature of the teaching environment. For example, the lecturers would often join students for lunch; and wanted me to address them by their first name, not the formal “Mr” or “Mrs” which I had to use at school when addressing my teachers. It was the first time in my life where I felt like I was being treated like an adult and an equal. I feel like I have incorporated some of this into my own teaching technique. When I teach my students I want them to feel relaxed, enjoy the lesson, and call me “Matthew” not “teacher”.
In the UK, at the end of your final year, we have to write a 12,000 word dissertation (I believe in America it is called a “thesis”). This is a formal written research project submitted to your university to earn your degree. It requires extensive original research and critical analysis. While at school I often dreaded writing lengthy essays as it was often about a subject I had little interest in. I truly disliked it. However, at university I relished it. It was the first time in my life I felt a passion for writing. And I believe this was because I was writing about a topic of my own choosing, which I had a passion for. Once again this is something I try to incorporate into my teaching at Smart Kids English. I understand that students will write better if it is about something personal to them. So I always encourage them to write about personal experiences and opinions.
It was a very special time in my life and I look back at those years with great affection and fondness.

この科目を学ぶ上で私が最も気に入っていたのは、その自由さと、講師の教え方や私たちへの接し方でした（英国の大学では、「先生」の代わりに「講師」という呼び方をよく使います）。講師は私たちのために映画を上映し、その後、その映画のテーマやメッセージについて話し合うよう促してくれました。また、オープンな読書授業もあり、学生は本や記事を読み、たとえ講師の意見と異なっても自由に自分の意見を述べることができました。異なる文化に関する本を読んだり映画を観たりすることで、私は新しい考え方に触れ、世界への興味を強く抱くようになりました。これは私が「Smart Kids English」でも実践しようとしていることです。生徒たちにさまざまな国（特に英語圏の国々）を紹介し、その文化について教えるよう心がけています。
